In this paper, analysis and research have been done with finite element method about the asphalt concrete core-wall earth-rockfill dam building on the deep overburden. The Duncan-chang and Goodman constitutive model are programmed on the second development platforms UMAT and FRIC offered by ABAQUS software. Based on the Ertanggou asphalt concrete core-wall earth-rockfill dam,2d and 3d calculations and research have been done with finite element method. The results show that the dam is designed reasonably; it won't produce hydraulic fracture, pull and press damage, and shear damage. The effects of core-wall's mechanical parameters and the connection types between the core-wall's root and the concrete support to the stress state of the core-wall's root are particularly calculated and discussed. It shows that the effects of the core-wall's mechanical parameters are enormous, and the effects of connection types are negligible. According to the compare between the results of 2d and 3d calculations, it shows that the 3d calculation can remove the errors caused by plane strain simplification, and can reflect the real situation much better.The application of infinite element to the farther foundation of earth-rockfill dam is also discussed. The results of infinite element method are compared with the results of the general finite element method. It shows that the former method which uses infinite elements to simulate the farther foundation has low computational complexity, high accuracy and obvious superiority and rationality. The finite element analysis model of a rock-fill dam in a river with terraces is built. The initial geostress is poised correctly considering the stress history. The calculation results show that the strain of the dam is reduced greatly when considering stress history, and the position of the maximum points rise obviously.In this paper, the experiences and skills of numerical calculations with ABAQUS software are summarized so as to offer convenience for communication and discussion to persons who do the relative things, and also help to expand the application scope of ABAQUS software in the calculation field of earth-rockfill dam.
