More and more large-scale bridges have been built for the rapid progress of the human society and urgent requirement from communication. Accordingly, the safety, durability and functions of these bridges have received greater attention. Thus, health monitoring systems (HMS) have been applied recently. On the basis of studing and summarizing the bridge's health monitoring technologies, a newly developed multi-agent technique is brought forward to HMS in this paper. An intelligent monitoring system for large-scale bridges based on multi-agent is established. The feasibility and superiority of using the multi-agent technique to solve the problems which the current HMS has faced is investigated. The methods of agent-oriented and the agent based organization modeling are analyzed. Along with an integrative description of the HMS, a model of the intelligent health monitoring system for large-scale bridges based on multi-agent has been presented. The systematic structure and operation principle are analyzed. A detailed description for agent'sinternal structure & function of each function model is introduced. The key technologies of the system, including the MAS based system designing method, the distributed database establishment and the communication & cooperation among agents mechanism are researched. The implementation of the system is expounded .Practical application on Dong Ting Lake Bridge shows that the proposed system can amend the separation of four independent systems effectively, i. e. the monitoring system, the diagnosis and evaluation system, and the control maintenance & management system. This technique can obviously improve the reactivity, activity and reliability of the original system. The proposed system can give an alarm when fault is detected, then provide useful decision supports for the management & maintenance of the bridge. The paper is partially supported by the key technology research and development program of Hunan Communication Bureau"Large-scale bridge state online monitoring technology and monitoring system development"(Grant:200223).
