This paper take the 1.3L Toyota 8A as example, describing the basic principle and structure of manifold catalytic converter, studying main factor,approach and key technology of catalytic converter. This design include mat substrate catalyst manifold inlet and outlet cone shell front and back flange and shield and etc. though every components has his own requirement and they were all set to meet more efficient low back pressure high durability and low cost. The design of manifold catalytic converters always make manifold and catalytic converter as a whole to consider. In order to avoid the exhaust emission flow intervene, exhaust emission flow of connective manifolds should not superpose or avoid. The design of inlet cone should ensure enough expand space and transition round edge. The position design of oxygen sensor have a big impact on the signal of oxygen sensor, every work cycle of every cylinder have the similar flow impact on the oxygen sensor is required. then advanced research is focused on simulation calculate during optimization course ,real vehicle test,matching test and so on, using CFD tools to calculate the flow character of catalytic converter is especially described.At the last half part of this paper, key technology about catalytic converter frock,main factor to meet robotic zed weld and substrate canning technology is described. As manifold catalytic converters have more weld part and have a high requirement of weld quality , the control of weld distortion caused during its manufacture is very important to the coherence and quality of the product. the design of frock should have a good consideration about operation,safety,anti-misopration,the canning of catalytic converter is the key technics to ensure use of catalytic converter, taking the intumescent mat as example, good canning should ensure substrate should not been broken when mat is heated while enough force to hold the substrate in the right place between the substrate and shell when mat shrink with temperature dropping.The catalytic converter Is designed based on certain driving conditions, petrol quality, control system and car types, the change of any factors will have a big compact on the using and efficiency of converter, that is very important.
