Our country has a vast territory and a large number of bridges, so it is very important to pay attention to the condition of bridge safety. Bridge inspection is an effective way to determine the condition of bridge safety, and is the only method to obtain the bridge actual work state. However, only the itemized inspection of each component was carried out for the bridge inspection in the past, and the whole safety condition of bridges is very fuzzy. Therefore, it is very difficult to determine the classification of bridge safety condition and the choice of prior reinforcement. This paper first introduces the basic theory and method as well as the fundamental knowledge of fuzzy synthetic evaluation theory, and the fundamental procedures for fuzzy evaluation are obtained. According to the chosen principals of safety evaluation factor , actual work experiences, relevant theory and codes, combining with engineering examples, the corresponding major judge factors and sub-factors are chosen for the evaluation of bridge safety degree, and the judge standard of the corresponding factors as well as the appropriate membership function curves are laid down. Since the complexity for influencing factors of safety degree and the fuzzy of evaluating rules, the classification for numerous factors of affecting bridge safety is carried out based on the fuzzy synthetic evaluation method. The fuzzy judgment for safety grade of each factor is carried out one layer by one layer, and then the final results of bridge safety judgment through the fuzzy synthetic evaluation method. The results show that it is very effective for the application of fuzzy synthetic evaluation method in bridge inspection, and the whole safety condition of the bridge can be understood quickly and accurately, which can provide the basis on the prior reinforcement of the bridge.
