This paper mainly discusses issues related to the risk of slope using Geographic Information System (GIS). A slope risk assessment system is established support by GIS. And an example is analyzed by using the system. The major research and achievements in this paper are as follows:1. To discuss the status of the geological disaster risk assessment. At present, more research referring to qualitative risk assessment is discussed according to the geological conditions. And the research for quantitative risk assessment was not enough. This paper is focus on quantitative analysis of economic loss and risk to life of the slope.2. The contents, methods, and steps of risk assessment are discussed. And the main ideas of risk assessment for geological disasters (landslide) are studied. According to the slope stability and the risky factors of landslide disasters, the slope indicators of risk assessment are established. At the same time, the allow risks value for economic and life is recommended.3. Avenue is used for the development of the system, and the 3D geological model of slope is established by the system.4. The method and steps to establish a risk assessment system for Slope are described. To discuss four aspects of the system function: database module, editor module, analysis module and the query module. A variety of programming methods are used for the calculation of failure probability, and the results are compared. Life risk and economic loss are calculated in accordance with the steps of risk assessment. At last, the grade of the slope is advised according to the standard for risk assessment.5. A cutting profile function has been developed. It can draw arbitrary profiles and calculated landslide thrust, checking slope stability. The stability coefficient and thrust of the 3D slope could be calculated using the function of stability analysis. The results are useful to support design of a slope.6. With a slope of Chongqing as an example, the application of the system is discussed. The study results indicate that the risk assessment of the slope using GIS has a lot of advantages. And the risk assessment of Slope system is very useful through GIS secondary development.
