With the rapid growth of economics, power quality issue has increasingly captured considerable attention from both utility companies and their customers. In order to assure the quality of power supply and pertinent service level, and then ensure the normal dealings between utility companies and customers in rated limits, it is indispensable to put a penalty or a premium due to the effect of a customer, which embodies the corporate responsibility for power quality. Research of harmonic location methods and development of measuring equipments has theoretical and practical value.On the basis of consulting literatures, summarize the cause of harmonic emergence, harmonic harm, the harmonic source location and harmonic emission level methods. According to the harmonic power method and harmonic impendence method, some suit methods are induced. This work is the theory base of developing location of harmonic source system.After summarize the methods, this paper according to the characteristic of virtual instrument, conclude some methods applicable to location of harmonic source. Besides, this paper put forward a new method based on linearity regression and superposition principle. This method not only localizes the harmonic source but also estimate harmonic emission level.The location of harmonic source system is designed implemented in this paper. It is a new type of virtual instrument based on the advanced the DSP and computer technology. The system has the abilities of long-term online operating, real-time measuring and analyzing, managing of history data, etc. Compared with the traditional analyzer, it has many advantages, such as easy controlling, strong processing and graphics output, etc. It is able to record the abundant and integrated data for the Electric Department, and provide the reference for selecting correct compensation technology.This system has a lot of advantages, such as small, powerful, etc. The design and realization of the harmonic location system based on the VI technology is introduced in detail then the running examples of several functions are given.
