The line loss of power network is a comprehensively economic and technical indicator. It can reflect not only the rationality of the structure and operating model of the power network but also the technologies and management abilities of an electric enterprise. The concise and rapid methods of line loss calculation and analysis can not only benefit the finding of the major impacting factors of loss, but also handle the future tendency of line loss. Besides it can improve the management of line loss and minimize the loss and finally add momentum to the economy of power network.The application of computer and information technologies in geology gave birth to the Geographic Information System (GIS), the appearance of component GIS brought it another chance to innovation and perfection. The component GIS properly improved its functions with abstraction and provides them to user as components, all these make it superior to the traditional GIS and broadly apply to all aspects related to space information. However it is rare to use the component GIS in the management of the rural power network. Basing on the mentioned reasons this paper proposed to take advantage of the component GIS technology to explore the management system of line loss in rural power network.In this article aiming at the disadvantages of the management system of the traditional rural power network and the hot requirement of the electric departments, the idea and technology based on Geographic Information System to realize the functions of line loss management is discussed, at the same time the general structure, data model and the calculation of line loss have been studied as well as applied to real conditions.In this article the basic condition and policies of the rural power network is introduced at the beginning, then the domestic and foreign progress and status quo of application and technology in line loss research and power GIS are discussed and recounted. Based on several common methods of line loss calculation, some research and comparison in accuracy and applicability among these methods are discussed, In terms of above mention, the construction goal, principle and function structure of the rural power line loss management GIS system on component GIS technology are sufficiently discussed. The mode of system database and method to finish the graph management are explained. Aiming at the line loss calculation, the back/forward sweep method improvement is mentioned, and the rationality of this arithmetic is validated. Finally, the function of line loss calculation is realized in this article, and several calculation methods and simple operating in the realization of line loss calculation are provided. Some practical samples are given and through verifying the results are satisfying. In addition, though analyzing the results of calculation, the reasons of bulky line loss brought are pointed out, and the measures reducing the line loss are brought forward.
