Developing ultra-high voltage and extra -high voltage is the certain trend of our country's electric power industry, ultra -high voltage and extra -high voltage have brought forward higher request for the safety and stabilization running and electrical energy quality of the network. Reactive compensation and reactive balance could improve the stabilization of the transmission system, increase the transmission ability, and restrain the over-voltage of the system. Along with the more and more complex network structure and the higher and higher voltage grade, it is far from the adequacy to only depend on the automatic booster to adjust the voltage and reactive power and it is necessary for the network itself to improve the adjust and control ability. At present, one of the most abroad used reactive power compensation devices in the power system is the shunted reactor. The existing extra-high voltage shunted reactor is not controllable, and it is accessed to the transmission line all along and can't be removed. When the fault removing and reclosing happen in the line, it will bring about power frequency and operation over-voltage. How to make the shunted reactor to be controllable is the realistic request and the developing trend, and in order to adapt for the rapid change of the load, the reactor should have the function of high speed respond.The controllable reactor is a special ultra-high voltage or extra-high voltage shunted reactor. It can adjust the capability of itself automatically and smoothly along with the change of the transmission power. Moreover, when the line transmits large power, once the transient state process happens, it also can increase the capability rapidly and present deep strong compensation. That is to say it still has the function of reducing power frequency and operation over-voltage.This paper introduces the research evolvement of the controllable reactor in and abroad and the detailed classifications. It analyzes the basic work principle, basic character and mathematical model of magnetic circuit adjusted type controlled reactor emphatically. It uses used Matlab/Simulink to process building model and simulation. It also proves the correction and validity of the method of this paper. Combining with the engineering practicality, it puts forward the adjusting ranges of the ultra-high voltage controllable reactor. The results have proved that in the ultra-high voltage engineering, the installation of the controllable reactor each 600 km or so can satisfy the voltage and reactive power requests in the long transmission lines and large power transmission systems.At last, by using the two controllable reactors'principle, the paper realizes the suppressing of secondary arc current and recovery voltage, puts forward a new controllable suppression-arc coil type and gives the control strategies.
