The steel slag's physical performance is similar to natural stone, it is a kind of fine road aggregate. It includes hydraulic minerals such as C2S,C3S. The production of steel slag in our country is large but its utilization ratio is low. The steel slag pollutes the environment a lot. At the same time, a lot of road constructions are short of aggregate in our country. It is very significant that if we use steel slag as the aggregate in the road base.In this article, Wuhan Steel Corporation natural cooling steel slag is studied as the research object, the stabilization of steel slag and the road base material with steel slag as aggregate is studied. The fly ash-steel slag(FA-SS for short), fly ash-phosphogypsum-steel slag (FA-PG-SS for short), cement-fly ash steel slag (C-FA-SS for short), fly ash-steel slag-aggregate (FA-SS-A for short), lime-fly ash-steel slag-aggregate (L-FA-SS-A), cement-fly ash-steel slag- aggregate (C-FA-SS-A for short) is prepared, the steel slag act as hydration activity binder and the fly ash act as pozzolana component and phosphogypsum act as sulfate excitant. The matrix of these new road materials is studied, and hydrated mechanism and the intensity forming mechanism of the inorganic binder stabilized steel slag is studied, at last, the economic appraisal to these kinds of materials is also carried out in this article.It was showed that after Wuhan Steel Corporation's steel slag has aged for a year, its stabilization suits the requirement of the road base materials. It can remarkably improve the stabilization of the steel slag road base material when put the fly ash in the road base mixture. The effect is good when using cement,lime and fly ash stabilize the steel slag. The strength performance of FA-SS is similar to Lime-fly ash-steel slag, it can meet the highest strength when the ratio of steel slag to fly ash is around 1:1 to 2:1; As the activation of phosphogypsum to the pozzolana reaction, it can remarkably improve the early strength when put phosphogypsum in the FA-SS, the best content of phosphgypsum is 2.5%; When the ratio of fly ash to the steel slag is 10:90, it is good that use cement to stabilize. It can improve the strength and stabilization when compound the steel slag and crushed stone to become the complex aggregate. The FA-SS-A can reach some strength, the best content of complex aggregate is 80%. In the L-FA-SS-A, it can meet the highest strength when the ratio of lime to fly ash and the complex aggregate is 5:15:80. In the C-FA-SS-A, it can meet highest strength when the ratio of fly ash to the complex aggregate is 10:90. Contrast the steel slag road base material and the conventional road base material, it was showed that the former has the better mechanic performance. The strength reforming mechanic is also studied, it was showed that the steel slag can improve the component of the hydrate, increase the coagulation, it is very useful to increase the strength of the road base materials. The steel slag road base material can largely reduce construction cost; it has the fine economic benefit. The prospect of this new material is extremely broad.
