With rapid development of economy, vehicles are becoming more and more popular for common families. Automobile seat is an important component that influences the automobile safety, which represents its capability of preventing the injuries caused by accidents and protecting passengers as much as possible. The static strength of automobile seat is directly of vital importance for the passive safety, and is the basic strength requirement to the seat structure as well. The theory and method about study on the static strength of seat have been generally accepted. However, it is proved that the traditional research method on seat design could not satisfy the requirement of modern development. And as a more useful, believable method, the finite element method simulation is now in widespread use.The automobile seat research of our country was began in 1980s, which means we still have a long way to go to narrow the gap with the advanced level. On pursuing safety, energy economizing, environmental protection, contemporary seat designers are facing the task of creating versatile, lightweight structures with minimum cost. Therefore, more and more attention should be poured into the automobile safety research to find a suitable way for our country.Just under this background and based on the test and finite element simulation that were already accomplished on certain sedan seat, a new idea for optimizing seat structure is introduced. And it is proved correct through the finite element simulation and analysis. This paper consists of five chapters: In chapter one, the influence of automobile seat on passive safety is detailedly discussed. The research method and status of automobile seat on passive safety both at home and abroad are analyzed. The content, target and value for this paper are represented.In chapter two, the regulations and standards on passive safety of automobile seat are introduced. Then, the test and finite element simulation on certain sedan seat are detailedly introduced. After the comparison of dates between test and simulation, the validity of method that is used in this paper has been proved.In chapter three, how the new type of sedan seat structure comes is systematically introduced. And the process of building the finite element model is described. It consists of two kinds of section, shell section and beam section. There were 33,741 nodes and 32,746 elements in this model. Considering the loads distribution, the cover, seat cushion and some springs were ignored in the model. The seat frame was assembled by three kinds of connection, welding, bolting and riveting. In order to make the simulation easier, all the connections were defined as rigid connection in the model.In chapter four, based on requirements of our national regulation, simulations on static strength were carried out. Meanwhile, several kinds of steel tubes with different radius and sizes were used in the simulations to find the most suitable structure. The mass of the new type sedan seat has been reduced by 5.8%, and the new structure was easier to be made with a lower cost.Chapter five is the summarization of this paper. The content and result of this study are mainly represented, as well as the study prospect from now on.The traditional sedan seat structure had been put into production for almost 30 years. Although the seat had been optimized for several times and can still satisfy the requirements of regulations, it had gone out of date when compared with modern trend. Therefore, we made a lot of improvement on that traditional structure to make it not only satisfy the safety regulation but also save cost and be easier to produce.
