Since the middle of twenty century, tractor trailer transportation is rapidly developed worldwidely with the high quality highway steadily improving, especially after a lot of freeway is built, it could be seen everywhere now that the tractor-trailer busily travel through the high quality highway. The automotive manufacture and automobile transportation are been attracting by the tractor-trailer transportation, because of whose the best profit making capability as well as good adaptability to big-long ponderous parts or container or super huge-long ponderous parts, there are many countries have already devoted lots of time and money to the design and manufacture. With the development of tractor trailer transportation, people pay more attention to reducing the disadvantage to the lowest level, it has been proved through practical activity that there are some important methods to keep safety such as correctly using the tractor-trailer,maintaining at the right time and properly repairing and so on. However, if the parameters could be reasonably designed, the hidden trouble could be eliminated and the actively safety could be rapidly improved .This paper tries to improve the tractor trailer active safety from reducing the off-tracking of tractor-trailer.This paper mainly does the following researches on the tractor-trailer steering:1) The tractor-trailer steering is a very complicated process ,for which just concerns the steering ,so author predigests the whole system,rolling and yawing influence are neglected, as well as whole steering system response time and all kinds of mechanical windage, the tractor-trailer system could be transform into two single staffs without quality.2) The paper makes kinematics analysis on the tractor-trailer system, as well as the evaluating parameters on the tractor-trailer steering, including the steering radius,the steering channel width,off-tracking and so on ,especially the off-tracking of tractor-trailer steering, including ordinary and steering tractor-trailer.3) This paper builds the tractor-trailer steering model, it is simulated by the Matlab with the road input, at last ,the computer simulation result in the first quadrant of could be gained from that.4) This paper merges the steering trapezia and the slipping fifth wheel to improve the tractor-trailer self-tracking ability, when the tractor front wheel steering angle input is bigger than a certain value, the slipping fifth wheel was pushed by a mechanism driven by gas ,which is pushed by the staff linking with the steering mechanism. Matlab is used to simulate the whole system motion, the final result is compared with model experiment.5) The similarity theory is used to build the vehicle model, which is used to test the kinematics model made and designed before, according to what we got after comparing the simulation result and model experiment result, the wanted result. is got.
