Transportation came from the social production and living activities, greatly related to human behavior. With the invention and development of automobiles, great changes occurred within transportation system, which heavily propelled human progress. In modern society, the increased use of automobiles becomes a headache for the consequent traffic congestion, accidents and environment pollution. Advanced city traffic control system is a key path leading to raised urban traffic efficiency, and is a symbol for city modernization. The paper researched on the performance index of dynamic division about traffic control sub-area, the key technique in the intelligent traffic control. Focus was on model and model's valid analysis of performance index. The dissertation starts with intersection and road, discusses cycle index and volume-distance index of traffic control sub-area. The research is composed of interrelated chapters as follows:In Chapter One, research background, significance and content were depicted. The traffic control in urban area is based on dynamic division of traffic control sub-area, and the performance index is basis of traffic control sub-area's rationalization. Combined fundamentals and affected factors dynamic division of traffic control sub-area, describe the performance index, give a demonstration and make a traffic simulation. In chapter Two, basic information and traffic parameters about traffic control sub-area were introduced. Traffic engineers abroad already at length described qualitative fundamental about dynamic division of traffic control sub-area, and found out three fundamentals——distance fundamental, volume fundamental, cycle fundamental. Many studies were performed to study the probable factors to be considered for traffic control sub-area. They are summarized below: roadway geometric characteristics, vehicle arrival patterns, roadway interruptions, one-way or two-way operations, existing communication system and so on. Finally traffic flow parameters and traffic control parameters were introduced. In chapter Three, cycle index of traffic control sub-area was found. Cycle fundamental is an important fundamental. If all intersection in same sub-area perform coordinated control, all intersection's cycle must be same. So some intersection's cycle will be change for sub-area coordinated control and urban traffic control effect. Every intersection has a floating extension of cycle. If the near sub-area's cycle is close to near intersection's cycle, the intersection is combined. Cycle index is found for figuring out the floating extension of cycle. Based on relation of cycle and capacity, saturation and delay, find out a method of cycle index with mutative rate of capacity and delay. Later, give a demonstration about cycle index and analyzed the affected factors, obtain the relation of cycle floating extension and intersection's losing time.In chapter Four, volume-distance index was found. Roadway traffic state is an important factor which affect sub-area's coordinated control effect. In short distance roadway, vehicle queue will trace to the near intersection. In long distance roadway, traffic flow's discrete phenomenon is obvious. When divide traffic control sub-area, found index only with distance is incomplete. A light volume short distance roadway or a heavy volume long distance roadway must be considered. So the performance indexes of traffic control sub-area contain two parameters, volume and distance. Based on traffic wave theory, find out a vehicle queue model and volume-distance index. Finally validate the model with traffic simulation; a good result of queue model was achieved. In the fifth chapter, the author sums up the dissertation, looks back all the course and development of the research and enumerates all the problems that need to be further studied.
