Reactive power optimization is one of the most important control methods toensure power system operation securely and economically, and an effective measure to improve the voltage quality and reduce the power loss. Study on reactive power optimization has the great significance in theory and practical application.The genetic algorithm is a kind of self-adapting optimization method based on the mechanics of natural selection and evolution. It is appropriate to deal with the discrete and multi-variable combined optimization problem. The paper introduces the basic theory of genetic algorithm. Then the improved genetic algorithm is adopted to solve the reactive power/voltage optimization problem. The improved method is applied to the 10KV buses systems.The test resultshows that the improved genetic algorithm is effective and reliable to solve reactive power/voltage optimization.
