SAR is the most widely used technique of the radar imaging. Now, the airborne and the space-borne SAR are widely used, the sub-meter resolution can be achieved, the quality of the scene images are as well as that of the optical images of the same class. Using the high resolution ability of SAR and incorporating the other radar techniques, SAR can be used to retrieve the terrain digital elevation model(DEM) and detect the ground moving targets. So how to improve the quality of the scene image and locate the target properly become an important task. The study on the technique of SAR is usually based on the SAR imaging, the understanding of the SAR imaging theory and the realization of the imaging algorithm are the necessary condition for SAR imaging. The theory of the SAR imaging is introduced in this paper in the view of how the high resolution of the range direction and azimuth direction is achieved by the radar in physical conception ,and followed by a discussion of the usual SAR imaging algorithm. The reason why the SAR are needed exigently lies in the global posture, especially in the martial region. The task of the SAR is to discover the targets, surveillance the battlefield environment and prepare for destroying and setting down a plan, so how to improve the quality of the target and locate the target properly become an important task, in this paper, It is introduced in this paper a kind of adaptive algorithm—Spatially Variant Apodization which can improve the quality of imaging scene and makes a firm foundation for the target location in strong reflected scene, especially in the strong reflected scene of cities. We have a brief discuss of the method of target location under the condition of broad side and small squint mode in SAR based on this foundation.
