The number of floating population in China is large now and it will be increasing. The high population ratio of floating people in big cities has affected population distribution strategy and residences' daily life evidently. The internal separation of registered and actual residences in big cities has become an important phenomenon of China.Based on empirical analysis, this paper researches the spatial characteristics in the floating population of Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou. The research can be divided into two levels: the urban level and the community level. By using the relatively data from the 5th census in 2000 of Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou, the research of the urban level analyzes the spatial characteristics the floating population. Based on the empirical investigates of Shanghai community, the research of the community level analyzes the characteristics of floating population on a different term.In the last part, the paper analyzes the typical examples, resolves the primary facets which effect the special characteristics of the floating population in big cities of China. Finally, concludes types of population distribution strategies and policies on planning to solute the increasingly important phenomenon of the big cities.
