Aircraft conceptual design such as missile design involves many different disciplines, including aerodynamics, trajectory, and propulsion etc. With theincreasing of products requirements, engineers recognize that these disciplines should be treated as a whole system instead of separate ones. Its goal is searching a global optimal solution based on considering the coupling effects among disciplines. This makes such complex system design become a huge optimization problem which may not be solved by traditional methods. Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) is a new promising method to solve such complex engineering optimization problems.This paper focuses on MDO methods and its application to air-to-air missile design. The major work of this paper includes:1. Compared with traditional optimization methods, the special concepts of MDO have been concluded based on the computation requirements and organizing of information between disciplines. Then several kinds of MDO methods are reviewed. By constructing their mathematical model and analyzing their academic property, the advantages and disadvantages of these methods are summarized.2. An Advanced Collaborative Optimization (ACO) method is developed after much effort basing on previous Collaborative Optimization. With classic math examples, the new methods' practicality and availability are validated.3. Analysis models of aerodynamics, trajectory and propulsion system are established. Based on these disciplinary analysis models, the proposed ACO is applied to air-to-air missile design. It is further validated by comparing the result with other method.
