Local and distortional buckling are important buckling modes for cold-formed thin-walled open sections. Different from buckling analysis of individual element, interaction of adjacent plates should be taken into consideration.Based on the buckling theory of individual element, Technical Code of Cold-Formed Thin-Wall Steel Structures GB50018-2002 specifies the size of edge stiffener of partially stiffened elements. In addition, unified approach considering the plate-assembly effects is used by the code and the difference of interaction buckling behaviors under different stress conditions is neglected. For the purpose of analyzing the interaction buckling behavior of sections in bending, the elastic local and distortional buckling behavior of common channel beams in pure bending was studied in this paper, which considers plate-assembly effects. The main contents are as follows: (1) several elastic buckling analysis methods were introduced and their characteristics were analyzed. (2) The finite strip analysis model was established and the analysis program for elastic buckling was worked out. (3) The influence of member length and sectional dimension (h/b, b/t and a/b) on the buckling behavior was analyzed by the finite strip program, and then the size of edge stiffener which would not lead to distortional buckling was determined. (4) According to the results of parametric analysis, the proposed buckling coefficients and simplified formulas for the calculation of local and distortional buckling were given.
