In design of gravity retaining wall, the traditional evalutating method is factor of safety method. It regardings soil as a uniformity material with a certain "average nature" material. The method treates various kinds of design index and various kinds of parameter as fixed values, then choose a certain mathematical model to calculate, and all belong to those unknown, indefinite factors a single safety coefficient. The result from the method is clear, so easy to accept by people. But such traditional method has neglected the uncertainty of the soil properties parameter, and does not conform with reality. In recent years, people have realized the uncertainty in the sol project question gradually and introduce probability analysis method into retaining structure..It is different from traditional factor of safety method, probability analytical method consider considered all sorts of uncertain factors existing actually in rational by way of probability, so it can reflect the real safety character of retaining structure for objective.It is imperative for gravity retaining wall structure, to design with the reliability method of retaining structures. The analyses or discussions are emphasis on the following contents:(1) The uncertainty factor in reliability design of retaining wall were discussed and make sure the random variables in the probability analysis of gravity retaining wall. These random variables include internal friction angle of soil, angle of wall friction, the unit weight of soil and base coefficient of friction.(2) This paper sets up the functions of limited state equation of anti-slide, anti-overturning and stability of bearing capacity of foundation soil in retaining wall based on theory of reliability and uses first - order second - moment theory in structural reliability analysis. The formula and program ("JC" Method, "optimization" Method and "M-C" Method) for reliability index calculation is obtained.(3) By taking a gravity retaining wall for example, compares the result of the method of safety factor and reliability analysis, illustrates the breaking reason of a gravity retaining wall in practical engineering.(4) According to the practical project, this paper introduces the anti-slide mechanism and design theory of the tenon. Compared to other anti-slide measures of retaining walls,the anti-slide tenon retaining wall has some merits, eg. its structure is comparable simple, quantity is comparatively little,anti-slide effect and economic effect is good . It meets the requrement of stability against slide and increases the capacity of the bearing pressure on foundation soilbecause of the tenon building in the foundation soil.
