Globalization and sustainable development are two major themes on urbanization in the 21st century. The human history has entered into a new era of global urbanization and urban globalization. As a result, there are clashes between western and Chinese cultures. All these trends turn the urban district into a cultural focus of preserving ethnic characteristics, identifying and sustaining cultural resources, and constructing a residential environment based on the harmony of human and nature.In China, the socialistic market economic system has been established. Historic towns and traditional residential communities are facing great challenges. First, the traditional architecture styles are disappearing in residential communities during the process of renovating old cities. Second, those residential communities left behind are undergoing material decay and social degeneration, which will lead to massive collapse of old cities and will affect the development of the entire city. This article will focus on methods to improve traditional residential communities, revive old cities, preserve culture context in traditional communities, and ultimately, reinvigorate old cities. This article uses MuDu, a historic town in SuZhou as an example to analyze the causes of the degeneration of traditional residential communities.
