Based on the research of FBG's sensing properties, the packaged FBG sensors have been developed for the sake of long-term health monitoring of large civil infrastructure. Also the strain and temperature properties of packaged FBG sensors well compensation techniquewas studied. And the problems of the strain transfer embedded in the host matrix have been studied. For the sake of specific condition in civil engineering, the modified FBG sensor were studied. Also the inbuilt technology of FBG sensor in plain concrete was explored. And when the packaged FBG sensors are in series of experiments projects, homemade FBG sensors have been used to monitor strain, temperature of the structures.The main contents of this paper are followed as:Firstly, based on the principle of light travel in FBG, the strain and temperature sensing properties of the FBG sensors as well as the coupling problems of them have been analyzed. The temperature compensation of FBG sensors are given when using as strain sensor.Secondly, the working principium of light travel in FBG has been introduced.Thirdly, considering the need of long-term monitoring for civil engineering, the mental tube packaged FBG strain sensor and temperature sensor are developed and their sensing properties are investigated experimentally. This home-made FBG strain sensor has been used in the test successfully.Fourthly, homemade FBG strain sensors and FBG temperature sensors have been used in experiments. The results show that the embedded FBG sensors can monitor possible fatigue and breakage damages of structure conveniently, it supplied reliable proof for health analysis of dam structure by action of earthquake. At the same time, it also monitor the strain response of rigid concrete pavements by static load and shock load successfully.
