The Research Of The Grand Courtyard In Jinzhong

Shanxi is praised as the treasure-house of ancient architectural structures. In addition to the temples which were built in the past dynasties and reserved up to now, folk houses are also an important part of it. In Shanxi, the number of the existing folk houses built during Yuan, Ming, Qing dynasties is close to 1300, among which the most fascinating part should be merchants'luxurious residence distributing in Jinzhong area. With a more and more thorough understanding of Shanxi merchants, the research of the culture of Shanxi merchants is also gradually bearing fruit. Subsequently the architecture by Shanxi merchants arouses more concern, particularly the grand courtyards they lived in, which carry their spiritual wealth and material wealth.The grand courtyards in Jinzhong are famous for their deepness and sumptuousness. In the long history of development, under the influence of many factors such as geographical environment, politics, economics, culture and customs, they gradually formed their own style and features. This thesis takes the dwelling houses of Shanxi merchants as the research subject and especially investigates the existing examples in Yuci, Taigu, Qixian, Pingyao, Lingshi of Jinzhong. With this as a research basis and with the natural geographical environment and the historical culture development as a research clue, this study analyzes the grand courtyards in Jinzhong from the perspectives of settlement environment, colony space, single body shape, minute part decoration and technique factors.The study adheres to the way of thinking from whole to part. Firstly, general situation in Jinzhong area is analyzed to introduce the background data which are closely related with the formation and development of the grand courtyards in Jinzhong; Next the settlement which deeply influences the constitution and features of inner architecture is discussed. Subsequently the internal space of the grand courtyard colony is analyzed and its characteristics of space organization and composition are discussed from different points of view. In addition to space, the sculpt and decoration are also the most spectacular factors in the image of the grand courtyards. The constitute parts inside and outside the courtyards are analyzed to sum up the vivid image characteristics of each part, and the complicated minute parts are classified to get the deep contention of thought and culture.
