In order to develop a better method for concrete-strengthening, an idea of wire mesh/steel bar mortar (WM/SBM)-strengthening was proposed. Firstly, a comparatively experimental study on wire mesh-mortar (WMM) strengthening concrete circular column and steel bar mat-mortar (SBMM) strengthening columns under axial load was carried out. The research results including 39 plain and strengthened concrete columns showed that, because of the better separation of reinforcement, the WMM cover failed with core concrete simultaneously, leading to a higher load carrying capacity and a higher ductility. Formulas for predicting ultimate load of WMM strengthening column were provided. Based on this, WM/SBM strengthening method was put forward in order to both use the advantages of WMM strengthening and enhance the ultimate load of repaired column significantly. 24 strengthening-columns were prepared for a comparatively experimental study. The research results showed that, the mortar cover of WM/SBM strengthening columns failed with core concrete simultaneously as well. Formulas for estimating ultimate load of WMM/SB strengthening columns were given in the thesis.As the first part of a research program to obtain a quantitative design method for overcoming diagonal cracks in cast-in-site concrete floor due to shrinkage and temperature differences, 12 RC concrete slabs strengthened by WMM were tested. The influence of layer number and volume fraction of wire mesh on crack space and width were discussed. Formulas for calculating ultimate moment capacity of strengthened slabs were given.In the end, according to the existed study on WMM and the problems appeared in this experimental research, some imaginations for the future research are suggested.
