In order to keep the better ductility of the reinforced concrete(RC) beams strengthened with wire mesh-mortar and to simultaneously increase the shear bearing capacity of the strengthened RC beams significantly, a thought of strengthening RC beams with steel bar / wire mesh mortar was proposed. In a fixed shear span ratio, a concrete strength and a longitudinal reinforcement ratio, different reinforcement methods, a comparison experiment study on shear behaviour of two kinds of strengthening RC beams(namely steel bar mat(S)mortar strengthening, steel bar / wire mesh(SW) mortar strengthening ) and contrast RC beams was carried out. The effect of SW on the shear performance of the strengthened beams was discussed.Test results show that the SW mortar strengthening still has the advantages of a better dispersion of reinforcement. Wire mesh can effectively constraint the strengthened mortar layer, leading to a much higher initial diagonal crack load. The co-action of steel bars and wire mesh results in increases of both shear capacity and ductility of the strengthened beams. The shear capacity of the SW strengthened beams is more than 30% higher than that of S strengthened beams, while the reinforcement ratio of the former is only 11% than that of the later. In the end, a future research conceive was put forward bases on the research actuality and the problems met during the experimental research.
