Base-isolated structure is installing rubber bearings on the bottom of building, through changing the inherent features of structure to reduce seismic responses and ensure security of the isolated structure. When rubber bearings are installed on the top layer of structure, it is called adding story and seismic mitigation structure.Isolation layer is required to locate on the base or basement of building. However, this is unsuitable for the aseismic structures with multi-towers on a great platform and seismic retrofitting of existing construction. The purpose of this study is to break the constraints of existing code and install isolation layer on the top layer of structure. If this way is favorable to both the upper stories and the lower ones, the new type of structure will be a great innovation and development of isolation technique, but also provide a new design method of buildings and seismic retrofitting of the existing construction.At present, it is not sufficient that the research of this new adding story and mitigation structure, including the principle and effect of aseismic response. Therefore, it is a very key issue to investigate systematically the adding story and seismic mitigation structure. Because it relates directly to design method of aseismic structures and design optimization. In light of this situation, this article has studied the content with emphasis as follow:1. As the motion equation of adding story and seismic mitigation structure is a non-classical damping, and the mass and rigidity matrix are non-symmetric, the complex mode method is used to disconnect the equations in the paper.2. In view of the differences between calculative method and the actual earthquake response of buildings, two full-scale models were made specially, including a adding story and seismic mitigation model and a non-seismic model. The rule of earthquake response was found out by studying systematically the experimental results of shake table when many seismic waves were inputted, and the comparison and analysis were investigated between the two type of structures.3. Both a seismic mitigation model and a non-seismic one were built to investigate the results of earthquake response in common commercial software SAP2000, and analysis was done between model simulation and experiment in order to testify the test results of shake table.4.
