Traditional dwellings are the valued products acquired from long-term manufacturing and practice by the labored people, which reflect the wisdom and experience and meet the need of their life instinct. They are based on the variable climate conditions, geographical conditions, custom and life style, adapt to local conditions, obtain raw materials locally, and utilize long-term experience accumulated generation by generation, at the same time guarantee to make this construction method easy to realize, design and construction totally themselves. Thus their styles change with different zones, but externalize the concordance between the man and nature everywhere. And they have strong vital energies included as partial of outstanding culture relics.For better inherit and grasp these valued cultural relics, our predecessors have done great deal of scientific research activities, but most of them only limited in the space forms, religion and culture, exterior distinction and functions, for more details of some reasons which formed a certain technology and other performance behaviors, few papers have been reported by now. Especially for study on the thermal performance of Chinese traditional dwellings' envelopes they always remain blank, most of them are mainly focused on the accumulated experience and accustomed construction habits, short of quantitative analysis in all aspects. This paper is just mostly focused on the thermal performance of Chinese traditional dwelling s' envelopes in different zones. Such work has been done as follows:1. This paper portrays the detail construction methods, styles and materials utilized in Chinese traditional dwellings' in different climate zones such as Manzu traditional dwellings in Jinlin city, Shanxi traditional dwellings, Shaanxi traditional dwellings, Sichuan traditional dwellings, Quanzhou traditional dwellings, Yunnan traditionaldwellings and Lingnan traditional dwellings. They are well chosen and investigated in situation or related documents.2. For further study the thermal performance of traditional dwellings, the primary effecting factors such as entire thermal resistance Ro, thermal inertia index data D, coefficient of accumulation of heat on the surface Y,y and thermal stable coefficient (ps, thermal performance of enclosure walls and roofs of Chinese traditional dwellings of different zones in China have been computed and studied according to the thermal design code for civil building (GB 50176-93) , and compared the results and laid out main effecting factors of thermal performance of buildings' envolopes.3. The curve relationship between the R> D and t was drew based on the numerical data. The regular character of the enclosure construction existed inherent is acquired. It is expected to supply theoretical basis for the rebuilding of traditional dwellings later, as reliable references for later research and promote benign development of traditional dwellings.
