The Research On Urban Block

Urban block is not only a basic element of city but one of the most important elements in urban design. Recently, great achievements have taken place in many cities in our country, but we can find the incompatibility of block development with the urban structure because of the lack of the research on block, which brings about aftereffects on urban sustainable development.From the view of block scale, this thesis introduces the concepts and characters of block and scale, indicates the importance of the research on block by summarizing the interaction between block and city. Then, the thesis expresses the historical evolution of block scale in West and China, and summarizes the interaction between block scale and politics, economy, social culture etc. at that time. And then, basing on analysis of aftereffects of block scale in current China, the thesis not only throws light on the goals of block, but also proposes some possible principles of block scale from the view of urban design, block management, urban management and so on, which will serves as the reference of designing practice on urban design.
