Balancing technique is an integrated technique, which is correlated with mechanics, dynamics and some other disciplines. It appeared with the development of the rotating machinery. With a long-term development, balancing technique has become one of the crucial techniques for the rotating machinery. As we know, rotating machinery is applied widely in the industries such as the power plant, the chemical engineering, the mechanical engineering etc. During operation it is quite often for the machinery to be stopped because of the vibration induced by the excessive unbalance. In such a case, rotor balancing is expected. Usually, field balancing is selected to eliminate or reduce the vibration caused by the unbalance. However, field balance is an iterative process of adding trial weight and adjusting weight. To do this, the machinery has to be stopped and restarted many times, so it will cost much time and lead to great economic loss. The idealist solution to the unbalance problem is to perform on-line balancing, that is to say, to carry out balancing without interrupting the operation of the machinery.Based on the summary of the vibration reducing techniques and the on-line balancing researches home and abroad in recent years, this paper puts forth a new kind of on-line balancing head, the pure mechanical on-line balancing head. This balancing head is applied on an experimental rotor. The on-line balancing experiment is carried out successfully. The followings are the main achievements.1. The property of the existing balancing heads are analyzed, a new kind of balancing head, the pure mechanical on-line balancing head, is presented. The detailed structure, the conjunction and the balancing characteristics of the balancing head are described.2. An experimental setup with this kind of balancing head is constructed. Other test and control device are equipped. The software process and the operating process of the experimental setup are described.3. After the necessary preparation, the experiments of the on-line balancing to reduce the vibration is carried out, the performance of the balancing head is evaluated. The experiments prove that the pure mechanical on-line balancing head can reduce the unbalance fast, efficiently and smoothly. After balancing, the experimental rotor can operate peacefully.4. The controlling strategy for this kind of balancing head is studied. Several control methods are putforward and tested. The comparison between is made.
