Study On The Settlement In Yujia Village Of Jingxing County Of Hebei Province

Cultural anthropology is special in the research of the settlement. In the past, the research of vernacular architecture has its defects: usually, it only pays attention to the layout, the types, the construction, the material, the space and so on, but seldom touches upon their historical background, cultural factor, natural conditions such as climate and geography, the residents'life and habitudes religions, etc. While in recent years, the methods of cultural anthropology have already permeated into the domestic research of the settlement. Attempting to find anew way of vernacular architecture research, the thesis suggests to study it from the angle of cultural anthropology. The settlement of Yujia village is typical model in Hebei, keeping building colonies with traditional characteristic that built in period of Ming and Qing Dynasty. The preservation and development of Yujia village is very important, because Jingxing county is becoming one of the historical and cultural cities in China. With the research of the settlement of Jingxing county being still in the blank state, systemizing analyzing and studding the settlement of Yujia village is the master content of this thesis. The main purpose of this thesis is to excavate the vernacular architectures'characteristics and cultural connotations from the cultural anthropology angle. At the same time, it intents to make a rational planning for the preservation and tourism of the village. The thesis is also expected to attract the whole society's attention to vernacular architecture and add to people's consciousness to the present vernacular architecture. Firstly the thesis introduces the natural conditions, the social and cultural background of the village. Secondly, it discusses the surface layer shape of Yujia village; Thirdly, using the method of the cultural anthropology, from the aspects of Confucian culture, clan systems, geomantic omen, customs and habits, and religious belief, etc, the thesis studies the deep structure of the village. Finally, the thesis affirms the value of Yujia Village, suggests the principles and measures of the settlement space's preservation and exploitation.
