Nowadays, city transportation is faced with the problems of heavier traffic, longertraveling distance and more complicated traffic network. On one hand, metro systemreceived priority because of its own advantages and its obvious significance toChinese transportation system. On the other, the related environment design lags farbehind, since not enough attention has been paid to it. This thesis makes a case study of Shanghai Metro, in an attempt to put forwardthe related principles and methods through systematic study of Chinese platformspace design. The aim is to change the present situation of passive adaptation topublic needs and to provide the public with a more convenient, comfortable andefficient environment products. The first part of the thesis gives an introduction of the background information ofthe time and the city, argues that its development is important, necessary and urgent, and emphasized the importance of environment products in the service and evacuationof the crowd. The second part clarifies the concepts and classification of Metro, platform space and environment products, in order to integrate them into a scientificframework. The third part is devoted to the properties and characteristics of theplatform, that is, the outside environment of the waiting service facilities. Theemphasis is put on the combination of factors related to both aspects. The followingpart takes the passengers as the study object, pointing out that the behavior of them isan effecting factor in the environment design of the facilities. The designing principlesare put forward in the fifth part through the analysis of the unique features ofenvironment products in light of the research results of the two foregoing parts. Finally, the resulted principles and methods are applied to the environment productdesign of a particular station. The research shows that environment products, platform space and passengers ofthe Metro are three factors interacting with each other, and they are inseparable in thedesign of environment products. The designs can not maintain good communicationwith the surroundings without the balanced consideration of the interactive factors.
