Design based on product platform is progressively applied in the development of weapons and civilian products, having become one of the most important methods of modern product design. To meet the requirements of product development, the intension of the product platform is deeply analyzed. Based on the real environment of product design, the construction and application of product platform are studied. The main achievements are described as follows:⑴The construction method of product platform, which integrates bottom-up method and top-down method, is established. The overall process of the solution is described through the white-box model mixed with features parameters flow model, and the characteristics as well as the key technologies of the solution are analyzed.⑵A Bottom-Up method of platform elements recognition is put forward. The modules of products are identified through the FCM method. The generality degree of modules class is calculated in this process. The validity of the results is determined compared to the predefined thresholds.⑶During the construction stage of product platform, the key steps including platform division, feature parameter mapping and feature parameter matching are analyzed. The grid model of platform division is established, and the division of product family is achieved. Artificial neural network model is introduced to simulate the experience and knowledge of product design activities, thus the mapping from the feature of product to the feature of modules is achieved. The feature parameter matching algorithm based on distance measure is put forward, thus the matching between the set of feature parameter is achieved.⑷A prototype system for supporting product platform design based on Virtual Skeleton Model is developed. The architecture and data model are designed and the key technologies to implement the system are analyzed.At the end of this paper, the technologies of the solution and its application are summarized.
