The current 3-dimention product design process is a parameterized trait sculpting system, which has made great progress over traditional geometry sculpting system. It can integrate all the project information in all design stages, and its sculpting process is much more compact, but there are still some problems with it. In order to solve these problems , the concept, meaning and architecture of 4-dimention(4D) information model are advanced, and a intact 4D product information system is established, to solve the technical problems related to it.The 4D information model oriented product design assessment is a key technology and a vital supporting tool for the implement of 4D information system. It is a guarantee for the cooperative query and obtaining overall optimum. The research on the theory, architecture, rules and method of product design assessment which orients to 4D information system and serving the product whole life cycle is of significant meaning to the further implement of 4D information system.The actuality of 4D information model is analyzed, and the similarities and differences of its application in mechanical domain and other domain are studied. The actuality of design assessment is discussed, and the advantages and disadvantages of mainstream assessment methods are analyzed. Based on the analyse of current 3D CAD design system, the basic conception of 4D information model is expounded. Based on object, the 4D product information model is divided into three layers, namely the data layer, the data object layer and business object layer, the architecture and meaning of which is expounded in detail. The 3D view description and architecture of 4D information are analyzed.Aiming at the inherent character of 4D information model, the architecture of product assessment system orienting to it is established, and its constitution is introduced in detail. According to the characteristic and requirement of each design stage, the assessment system and corresponding assessment mechanism are established. Then the methods and arithmetic of the system is researched. The synthetic assessment arithmetic based on wavelet neural networks is advanced. Aiming at the issue of information imperfection in dynamic assessment process, the base element method is advanced.Finally, taking the specific product, namely the eddy current retarder, as anexample, and making use of the API provided by SolidWorks, the experiment system is developed, which demonstrates the validity of assessment system orienting to the 4D product information model.
