Pedestrian traffic is one important part of the traffic system, especially atintersections where the pedestrian is very crowded, many conflicts amongpedestrian, vehicles and bicycles flow exists, which increase delay and decreasecapacity of the intersections. In addition, from the prospect of traffic safety, pedestrian is easy to be injured in the traffic accidents at intersection. In this paper, pedestrian at signalized intersections was studied using electronic stopwatch andvideo technique, and the characteristics of pedestrian was analyzed from severalparts including the disciplinarian of pedestrian arrival, the characteristics ofpedestrian crossing speed and the delay of pedestrian crossing. The disciplinarian of pedestrian arrival is one of the basic rules of traffic flow.It is desired to forecast the disciplinarian of pedestrian arrival, when designing thetraffic control system of pedestrian. In this paper, the disciplinarian of pedestrianarrival was observed and discovered that it is following the negativebinomial distribution, furthermore, the factors which affect the pedestrian arrivalhas been analyzed. All this has provided the basic data for signal design andmicrocosmic imitate and simulation of signalized intersections. The pedestrian crossing speed is important in signal design, its value affectsthe minimum green time directly. This paper analyzed the pedestrian crossingspeed at signalized intersection, and found the average crossing speed of pedestrianis 1.35m/s, following log normal distribution. Then analyzed the pedestriancrossing speed separately according to different gender, different age, the numberof pedestrian crossing together, enter crosswalk in different phase of green time, and results indicate that the speed of men larger than women', the speed of youngerlarger than older', the larger the number of pedestrian crossing together, the smallerthe speed is, the speed of pedestrian enter crosswalk in anaphase of green timelarger than that in prophase. As to signalized intersections, pedestrian delay is the important index toappraise the level of service which it provides. The pedestrian delay of differentphases, different part of crosswalk and different walking directions was surveyed inthis paper, and analyzed the relationship between value of delay and volume ofvehicle that caused pedestrian delay at different part of crosswalk in each phase, and also analyzed how walking direction affects the pedestrian delay. By contrastthe value of average delay measured with the forecast one gained through thepedestrian delay model that Braun and Roddin gave, the pedestrian signal design ofintersection has been adjusted by increasing the pedestrian green time and settingpedestrian flashing time. As a result, it decreases the conflicts between pedestrianand vehicle, and ensures pedestrian's security. On the base of the above research, this paper, according to traffic flow theoryand traffic control theory, based on the thought of pedestrian characteristic, byresearching the microcosmic behavior of pedestrian at signalized intersection, provided basic parameters for signal design, and also provided basic data andtheoretical bases for microcosmic traffic simulation of urban mixed traffic flow.
