| This thesis is originated from the cooperative project established by Wuhan University of Technology and Kanagawa University of Japan: "Sino-Japan's Cooperative Project of the Streets of Historic Town in Hubei Province" and "The Study of Protection Using Mode and Method of Historic Town in Hubei" published by Wuhan University of Technology. In the same time the case study is a part of the project of "the Study of Traditional folk house in Hubei". The thesis conducts a profound analysis of the layout, dimension of street and architecture features of Zhangji historic town based on the studies of its natural environment, historical culture, and economic mode with the attempt to propose the mode and method for historic town protection and development.The thesis is composed of the following seven chapters. The first chapter presents the introduction. Chapter two to chapter six serve as the core part of the whole thesis, which are devoted to the analysis of the forming and evolution process, site choice and defense layout, street space and architecture features of Zhangji historic town. The author consequently evaluates and specifies whether Zhangji historic town is justified to be listed among the provincial historic towns with a view of putting forward the conception on the historic town protection and development. The last chapter concludes the thesis and presents the prospect as well.Chapter one gives an introduction to the background, significance, object, research method and framework. In the meanwhile, the status quo of historic town studies at home and abroad as well as the former studies of Zhangji historic town is reviewed respectively.Chapter two initially elaborates of the changes of administrative district transition of Zhongxiang city and Zhangji town. The author then conducts an explorative and inferential study on the forming and evolutional process after the analysis of the natural geography, historical culture and economic environment.In chapter three the author analyzes the features of its site choice and defensive layout which is characterized by the three-in-one of "residence, commerce and defense" and the cause of its initiation.Chapter four illustrates the street features of Zhangji Town from such aspects as street function, overall spatial features, street frame, street size, construction features, and landscape. At the same time the drainage system of the historic town is introduced.In chapter five the architecture types, the architecture features and the key buildings are analyzed. The architecture of the historic town is classified in terms of function and spatial layout and the architecture features are accordingly analyzed.Chapter six presents the proposal to specify Zhangji town as Hubei historic town and the conception of conservation and development for historic town after matching the evaluation of current Zhangji with the concerned criteria.The last chapter concludes the thesis and presents the prospect as well. |
