The problems often come up against in the field of engineering, such as failure of foundation and collapse of soil slope , are at the bottom of the microcosmic-crack development in geotechnical materials. In this dissertation a series of model tests are carried out, in which the failure mechanisms of soil slope and the shear band in the failure of soil slope are study.In this thesis, the microcosmic-crack developments in soil mass are observed by microscope and CCD vidicon/ camera. The distributing of shear strain and the shear band in the course of failure of soil slope are analysed by the digital photograph-based deformation measurement technique. Through the FLAC numerical calculation method, the phenomena and results are testified by the analysis of the soil displacement field, velocity field, shear strain-rate and volume strain-rate.
