Heating systems of small towns is mainly decentralized, low energy utilization, and serious environmental pollution. Since the development of small towns has just begun, heat supply facility is relatively backward by the constraints of the local economy, and structure of energy consumption is irrational. Sustainable development of small towns is facing triple pressure of economic, environmental and energy. Thus, to improve energy consumption levels and push the process of modernization in small towns, the use of renewable energy is of great significance.From the perspective of the use of solar energy, the article analyzed principles of solar heating system and calculation method of the best solar fraction. Dest was used to calculate dynamic heating load to a residential building of small town. And the heating load is data base of the actual operation of solar heating system.The article simulated the dynamic operating status of solar heating system with TRNSYS, and analyzed the impacts of solar fraction in system. When the areas of solar heat collectors varied, the needed assistant energy and solar fraction changed with it. And, using the most cost saving as objective function, the optimal collector areas in system was determined. In the last part, using the method of annual cost, the article made analysis of solar heating system and other conventional energy system in economy as well as environmental benefits.The intent of the paper is to simulate the solar heating system integrated with the actual construction, then make initial exploratory research at the applications of this system in single residential building of a small town. For the purpose of fully utilizing solar energy and increasing solar fraction, the paper proposed solar heating system combined with variable flow.The variable flow solar heating system, which is proposed in this paper, provided a new idea for the design of heating system in a small town. The system will improve indoor thermal comfort and reduce environmental pollution.
