Huaihe river basin is located in the eastern region of China, between the Yangtze River basin and Yellow river basin, and is a region where the population density is bigger and the rate of land utilization is higher. Because of the special conditions of climate and geography in the Huaihe river basin, a lot of disasters including flood, water log, drought and storm tide occur frequently, which result in the great damage to the economic society of river basin. Therefore, it has been a dream of hydraulic engineers to develop a flood forecasting model system, especially a model coupling hydrology model with hydraulics model, and it is also important task in the Huaihe river training.In this paper, the aspects of the model such as design ideas, system structure and function features and so on have been introduced. The model parameters have also been calibrated and verified. Based on the analysis for the state and conditions of the Huaihe river basin, the model system coupling the hydrology model with hydraulics model has been developed. By combining Operational Forecasting with Graphics User Interface, the system can accomplish many tasks in real time operational flood forecasting by friendly interface. This model system has been successfully applied for the real-time flood forecasting in the Huaihe River in 2005.The main contents include:(1) Through analysis of the flood characteristics in the upper and middle course of the huaihe river, as well as the river net characteristics of the middle reaches after the flood storage, the model of complicated river net has been developed according to hydraulics method.(2) The Xinanjiang model including surface runoff, groundwater runoff and subsurface runoff has been developed according to hydrological method. It can be usedto simulate the discharge process of the control sections.(3) Based on the requirement of the real-time flood forecasting, it is developed the model system that couples hydrology model with hydraulics model, and the software has been edited and successfully applied for the real-time flood forecasting in the Huaihe River in 2005.
