Based on the theoretical analysis and practical investigation, summing up the phenomena of symmetry and asymmetry, this dissertation proposes the approach of the asymmetrical form in symmetry and study symmetry and asymmetry as a whole. As a directing approach to urban design, this dissertation sums up some principles and methods of this approach, and discusses their applications with case study.Start with the concept, characteristics and classification of the asymmetrical form in symmetry, the dissertation expands the basic understanding of the asymmetrical form in symmetry: the asymmetrical form in symmetry is a relationship between symmetry and asymmetry, a reflection of reasoning process. Then, it analyzes city with the concept of asymmetrical form in symmetry, and analyzes urban design with the concept of time and the theory of base and design. Based on the broad sense of symmetry and asymmetry in philosophy, together with the symmetry in the structure and function of society and city, the dissertation believes that city is the synthesis of commonness and individuality, a dynamic equation, and that it is the asymmetry in all sides of city that promotes the development of city. Meanwhile, there is a tendency that the cities along such transportation channels as roads and rivers distribute asymmetrically in translating symmetry and the cities around big city in circle symmetry. Next, this dissertation sums up some principles and methods of this directing approach in urban design. The principles include the control principle of "field", the difference principle, the arrangement principle and balance principle, and the methods include the method of assembling, the method of disassembling, the method of forming center, the method of intensifying symmetry and the method of producing differences, etc. Finally, this dissertation discusses the application of this directing approach through the case study of the tender project for 2008 Beijing Olympic Park and the project for a small massif. The author holds that the approach of the asymmetrical form in symmetry shows the relationship, that is, symmetry is the whole while asymmetry is the part, and that it is the expansion of symmetry to consider symmetry and asymmetry as a whole when designing and it can meet the requirements of the modern society. This approach emphasizes that the functions of symmetry and asymmetry in designing are different, but both are very important, and the two sides should be kept balanced, the asymmetrical form in symmetry would become meaningless if either side were overemphasized.
