The Portable Maintenance Aid(PMA) can receive diagnosis resources in a convenient way for maintenance staffs, thus, provide shot-cuts for the completion of diagnosis. It is extensively applied to the maintenance of complicated equipments. However, existing PMAs have rather limited security functions, therefore, they are incapable of meeting the requirements of remote diagnosis of the military equipments. In order to apply PMA to remote diagnosis system of the military equipments, it is imperative to research and develop new data security systems of PMA.Based on the analysis of the application fields of PMA and the research of its future application environment, this paper proposes a new model that is suitable for the remote collaborative diagnosis systems of military equipment. Instantaneous and delayed forwarding of diagnosis data are the two different types of service provided by PMA, so as to meet the demands on time of different applications. It makes a full analysis on the security requirements of PMA, designs a target model of the data security, and describes the functional modules of security system in detail. Furthermore, hierarchies of each module are specified according to the requirements of different diagnosis models. With regard to the features that PMA demands data security stringently, the paper combines the IPSec technology with the X.509 certificate to realize the secure data transmission. In addition, the paper studies secure multicast functions of PMA, and analyzes problems lying in it and needing resolutions. After that, the general framework of secure multicast in remote diagnosis systems is proposed. Furthermore, this paper performs extensions on the security function of PMA according to specific requirements of applications, and designs a enhanced security PMA, in which secure data storage, safe certificates acquisition and an improved authentication mode are implemented.
