With the development of ITS(Intelligent Transportation System),the research of ITS has been carried on in more and more countries. Nowadays, the navigation system for vehicles, a popular research problem, has become an important unit of ITS.Firstly, the development and technology of ITS, GPS and GSM/GPRS are introduced in the paper, and then the design of the navigation terminal for vehicles and the technology of SOC are discussed.Secondly, a kind of navigation terminal for vehicles, based on SOC, is designed in the paper. The key unit is realized by SCM of SPCE061A.By GM8123—a chip to expand serial ports, SPCE061A communicates with SIMIOO GSM/GPRS and GR-85 respectively: receive orientation information from GPS receiver, store the orientation information in the inner FLASH ROM and control SIMIOO GSM/GPRS. Then by the SMS/GPRS, the orientation information is transmitted to monitor center.To store a great deal of orientation information, FLASH ROM is used to extend the storage space. The technology of watch-dog and low-voltage check/reset are designed to improve the integration and anti-interference capability of the system. Additionally, the serial port of MPU are extended by GM8123 to realize multi-module control.Finally, the navigation terminal for vehicles based on SOC is uesd in practical orientation and navigation. The results show that the terminal has an advantage of higher precision and faster transmission velocity.
