Countries all over the world pay more attention to the technique of energy dissipa-tion and vibration reduction. In recent years, the dampers combining with the smart material have attracted many researchers for the properties of self-perceptive, self-diagnosis and self-adaptive. As one of those dampers, MR damper will be widely used in engineering for the virtues of low power requirements, large force capacity and controllable force, rapid response time, and temperature insensitivity. Through the theoretical analysis and test research, a kind of MR damper is developed in this thesis. The productions as follows: (1) Using the material characteristic of MR liquid, a new kind of reverse-effect MR damper is put forward in this thesis. Different from the tradition MR dampers, the reverse-effect MR dampers can offer the maximal damper without the current. (2) The work principle of the reverse-effect damper is discussed and the equiva-lent magnetic circuit is designed. Through the experiment, the effect of complex magnetic circuit is proved. (3) The theoretical model of the reverse-effect MR damper is established. A valve mode MR damper is designed and processed. The maximum force is 150kN and the maximum controllable force is 120kN. A tool is made to measure the magnetic field strength (or magnetic flux density) in the gap of the MR damper. (4) The basic mechanics performance of the reverse-effect MR damper is inves-tigated by the periodicity dynamic test. The result of the test is analyzed. (5) Two improved designs for the reverse-effect MR dampers are put forward. Through the ANSYS simulation the validity and feasibility of the designs are proved.
