In modern industrial production, quality control of erose object detection is set up by eyeballing, such as we mention in this article about the length and area detection of surface-defection of an engine rod. However, the way of eyeballing detection can't satisfy the requirements of high-speed detection, high-precision detection and "Zero defection" control, even though it increases a lot of labor cost and overhead expense. For this reason, machine vision comes up and is widely used to replace the eyeballing in detection field of electronic industry, automotive industry, pharmacy, printing industry and packing industry etc.The PC-based machine vision is limited to use for the product line application because it has deficiencies of long R&D time, high R&D cost, high requirement of environment and high cost of maintenance and so on. With the development of computer technology, embedded machine vision can well satisfy these requirements. All kinds of function were integrated into the system. It shortens the R&D time and reduces the cost that people can set up the detection task by menu selecting and parameter setting in HMI (human machine interface). The embedded machine vision system extends a wide application field of automatic production.This paper introduce the further research the key technologies of camera calibration, image measurement and edge inspection. We design the measuring system of fast surface-defection of automotive engine rod for final assembly line of engine plant-â…¡ of Volkswagen Shanghai Automotive Co., Ltd and get satisfactory results.
