Rolling element bearing is one of the most easily damaged parts of electromechanical systems. A lot of mechanical failure is relevant to the state of rolling element bearings. It is estimated that about 30 percent of mechanical failure is caused by its fault in the rotating machine with rolling element bearings. It is obvious that the quality of rolling element bearings has a great impact on the working condition of electromechanical systems. Because of wrong design, poor working condition or a jump heavy load, bearing will be damaged and worse during the running time. So at present, the fault diagnosis of rolling element bearings is a research hotspot.The analysis of vibration signals is the most common method in the condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of rolling element bearings.This paper generalized the fault mechanism and the vibration characteristics of rolling element bearings, introduced in detail some methods of vibration signals analysis and fault diagnosis for rolling element bearings, compared the characteristics of these methods, and researched deeply the spectrum analyses method based on wavelet packet transform.In order to make experiment for simulating the fault of a single rolling bearing, we constituted the fault diagnosis system of rolling element bearings. We measured and diagnosed some representative failure of 2612 type of rolling element bearing on the lab desk in testing laboratory and received satisfying effect. The collected data is transformed and input to a computer. We analyze signals and diagnose fault on the base of the WINDOWS operating system and the MATLAB softwaredesk. The paper processed the collected signals from the locale using these methods, such as power spectrum, envelope demodulated spectrum, wavelet packet transform. At the same time, it compared these methods and put forward some useful suggestions.The paper successfully completed the design task and the result meets the expectation. We researched the fault diagnosis methods and simulating experiment of rolling element bearings and validated the fault diagnosis methods of rolling element bearings.
