With the development of magneto technology, it is possible for motor being installed in the body under water to drive propeller directly. Thus, it makes the fast development of POD propeller. At present, POD propeller has already become the newest development trend of propelling technology in foreign countries. While only few units are engaged in research of it in our country. The study on hydrodynamic performance of POD is especially weak. In Shanghai Jiaotong University, a numerical method has been established to predicate the steady performance of POD propulsion, which the propeller blades are calculated by a vortex lattice method and the pod including its strut by a boundary element method for non-lifting bodies.The theory of panel method is used to find a theory way to predict the hydrodynamic performance of POD propulsion in this paper. The propeller is calculated by potential base low-order surface panel method. In surface panel method hyperboloidal quadrilateral panels are employed and the Morino's analytical formulation is used to determine the influence coefficients. The more reasonable pressure Kutta condition is satisfied at the trailing edge of propeller blade. The pod including it's strut is calculated by a boundary element method for non-lifting bodies.The main job of this paper is in research of the method for predicting the performance of POD propulsion. The mathematical model including geometrical expression of POD propulsion, paneling of propeller and POD geometry, iterative calculations for hydrodynamic interactions between the propeller and the pod, and calculations for hydrodynamic performance of propeller are respectively established in this paper. Comparisons made among the calculated data of abovemethod for open-water performance of only one propeller and the test result shown that surface panel method is in good agreement with test results. The calculated data of the POD propulsion, including the pod, strut and the propeller, requires proof of a test result.
