The overhead catenary system is the main facility for power supply in electrified railway. For long time, overhead catenary equipments have been managed in some traditional ways such as equipment bill and atlas which resulted in great difficulty and long period for equipment maintenance. So it is an urgent demand to develop a new information management way to follow the rapid development of equipment management. In this new way, modern science and technology must be included and it must adapt to the need of modern enterprises.In Geographic Information System (GIS) of overhead catenary system, computer graphic technology and data base technology are used for storage and processing of spatial information. GIS can map different information of overhead catenary system onto the shared data plat such as graphics , sounds , words , data etc so that it can realize datum sharing and classification search and create a spatial information mode of real geographic environment of overhead catenary system. GIS transmit spatial information and their attributes to users accurately and legibly and it can make auxiliary decisions with the help of its unique functions of spatial analysis and visual expression. This system is based on the MapX plat, adapting object-oriented programming technology and ActiveX control component. The interface is designed with Visual Basic, and supporting data base is MS SQL Server which is a large-scale structured data base.This system mainly includes the following modules: graphic editing and management, information inputting and upgrading, information statistic and analysis, graphic information searching and locating. It has such functions as follows: searching attributes by graph, searching graph by attributes, equipment searching and analysis, rapid locating and real video. These function modules can help enterprises improve their ability of total data management and making use of resource and can provide them an auxiliary support for better decisions.
