With the lack of energy source, especially the increment of the petroleum price in these years, it becomes very important to develop all kinds of technology of saving energy. And the technology of saving energy in vehicle is one of most important task in these fields. With the large need of van by people makes the possession of van increase rapidly. And the improvement of the traffic communication and the road also make the speed of the van increase rapidly. The aerodynamic drag of the car increases with a rate of square of the speed, which leads to a large consume of oil. But in our country, the focus of the aerodynamic characteristics research of the vehicle is the sedan and the passenger car. And the aerodynamic characteristics research of the van is ignored.In this paper, we investigate the external flow field of the box van, and achieve detailed disturbing chart of the pressure and velocity. We analyze the main reason of the aerodynamic drag. And basing these facts, we discuss how the cab roof fairing influences the aerodynamic drag of a typical box van. We also research the aerodynamic characteristics of the van which has a clearance between cab and carriage, and achieve many useful conclusions.Because the external flow field of the car possesses large flow separation, strong eddy and the anisotropy of turbulent development, and people have not understood completely the essence of turbulence.
