Urban green spaces are universally valued as amenity-recreation venues, wildlife refuges and essential livable-city ingredients. With recent rapid urbanization and associated brown and green field developments, ample opportunities arise to overhaul green space standards and patterns.Eco-city, which aims at harmonious of human and environment, has attracted more and more attention in the world since it is brought forward. In china, cities have made plan and taken efforts to achieve the goal to be eco-city. However, the definition and connotation of eco-city have not been fully understood. The paper presents the concepts and the characters of eco-city and analysis the basic condition and constraint of Xiamen to become an eco-city that has civilized community, high efficiency economy and healthy ecology. The key issues of achieve an eco-city that include ecological safety, ecological sanitation, ecological industry metabolism, ecological consciousness culture are discussed. To make Xiamen become an eco-city, we should make effort on organization, legislation, planning and publicizing. This paper also dissertates on the theoretical base, development stages, main features of an ecological city and its constitutive elements by defining "eco-city". Through such a definition, the paper states the significant role of green space system in the construction of an ecological city. By distinguishing the different stages of the city development in China, the author puts forward that the task of the city plan at present lies in the improvement and amelioration of the city's hard environment, especially that of the green space system. Through the explanation for the conceptions of green space, green space system and etc., the author considers it is the key for plan of the urban green space system to construct urban ecological green space system.Landscape ecology offers insights on optimization of space use vis-a-vis environmental conservation and improvement. It furnishes principles of green space organization related to the theory of island biogeography. In essence, large patch, high connectivity and propinquity foster species diversity and ecosystem functions. Such spatial concepts have been widely adopted in urban landscape architecture and landscape planning projects. In this paper, the Landscape Ecology model (patch-corridor-matrix) is adopted to analyze the urban green space system, at the same time, the principle and the way of thinking are provided. Finally, according to the framework of the urban green space system plan for ecological city, the author makes a sample study on Xiamen City in Fujian Province and puts forward a preliminary plan for its ecological green space construction.
