Recently years, with the rapid development of the high buildings and super high buildings and the extent of the production automation improving, tower cranes are being widely used in the process of modern construction and have developed toward high and big structure and intelligence continually. High and big structure means that the height, the range and the rising weight are bigger and bigger. In the circumstances, strict requirements are provided for tower cranes in security, reliability and high efficiency. The rapid development of micro-electronics, computer, examination and control technology make tower cranes tend to automation and intelligence, then tower cranes can work more calmly, more safety and control are more accurate and production efficiency are higher. Thus, application of microelectronics and modern survey and control technology, researching and making of tower cranes' real-time status monitor & control system are essential to promoting its work efficiency, reducing accident and recording its work status information.In this paper, the condition monitoring and control system of tower cranes are analyzed and studied, and the electric circuits and software designs are performed. Application of functional neural network resolves a non-linear problem in on-line measure tower crane's lifting moment and lifting weight, making the process of calculation easy and the measurement data accuracy. PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) is used to control electric circuit. And text display is used to show tower cranes' status parameters by numerical values. When the measurement values exceed the limit, security and protection device will alarm and record current parameters and cut off the electric circuits. The communication system between host computer and PLC are held, which use VC++ and communication control unit Mscomm. The host computer's commission is control and management tower cranes, for example: monitor PLC's I/O status, middle process variable, system information, tower cranes' status parameters and diagnose fault by on-line. There are other functions that can control PLC's I/O status and tower cranes' on-line control, that can set working range of tower cranes through host computer software, which efficiently resolve the problem of tower cranes collision. In order to raising security and high efficiency, fuzzy control principle is used to track hoist hook, which improve security and high efficiency of tower cranes. At last, by means of debugging the hardware and software, it is verified that the working condition monitoring system of tower cranes is feasible and effective.
