The highway, which does the important functions in the synthetic traffic systemof our country, makes a contribution towards the national economy and socialprogress. As an important part of the highway Intelligent Transportation System, thecharacteristic identification of vehicles provides enormous convenience for themanager. Presently the known systems are mostly based on video, magnetism,ultrasonic etc. The homologous equipments are expensive. However, the method ofcharacteristic identification based on acoustic signal analysis of vehicles seemssimpler, cheaper and more facility to extraction the vehicular information of style andload, which provide a new valid way for the study of this field. This paper applies wavelet packet analysis to the characteristic extraction andanalysis of the vehicular noise in the highway. Taking advantage of father dividing inthe frequency domain by using wavelet packet analysis, we can extract theeigenvector of the signals, from which the system can be managed by achieving therequirement of estimating the vehicle style and load. So, wavelet packet analysis istestified to be a new effective way in judging the vehicle information in highway.
