Nowadays, the maintenance of the generating equipments are going through a significant change. With the increasing improvement of the monitoring technologies for generating units, the methodology has been transited from the traditional method--- the time-based preventive maintenance (Scheduling Maintenance) to the predictive maintenance (Condition-Based Maintenance). This paper mainly implored the condition-based maintenance from the aspect of the energy characteristic. Several issues have been addressed as follows:Firstly, the current studies on the condition-based maintenance are dependent on the basis on the failure diagnosis. For a running hydroelectric generating unit, the index of energy reflects the integrated performance, and it is the emphasis studied in this paper. This paper discussed the design concepts, main function, system architecture and key techniques.Secondly, the energy problems of turbine running were researched, multiple field test methods of the energy characteristic of turbine were specified and a concrete application were illustrated through a project implemented by this author.Thirdly, the evaluation of energy indices will make the management more reasonable and scientific. However, there doesn't exist a perfect evaluation method at this moment. In this paper, the energy flow method has mainly been specified in detail on the basis of reviewing the existing several evaluation methods.Fourthly, according to the author's long-time experience of keeping engaging in the field tests of hydroelectric turbine upgrading by runner replacement in Liujiaxia hydropower plant in Gansu province, the energy indices have been improved after the runner replacement.Fifthly, the energy indices based real-time monitoring system (EIBOMS) is a part of the maintenance subsystem in ICMMS (Intelligent Control-Management-Maintenance System),and the energy index evaluation system(EIES) is also a constituent part of the Technical Management System. The EIBOMS and EIES have an important significance for the integration of ICMMS, which is able to be implemented though the integration of monitoring, analysis, evaluation and management of the energy index into ICMMS.
