Pre-stress steel structure (PSS) is to introduce pre-stress technology into common steel structure. It has a development history of 50 years. Initially it was used to aim at saving and reducing steel material cost. At present, the pre-stress steel structures have found their wide application especially in long span and super long span steel structures. The characteristic of PSS is the pre-stress members to be installed. Their function is to provide an action opposite to external loading and to improve deformation and moment distribution in the structure. As a result, the elastic range of materials been enlarged, and structural stiffness is increased. Based on many literatures, the paper presents the basic classification, the engineering application examples, main characteristic and the research method of PSS. The objective of the paper is to study the static and dynamic behavior of PSS by using a typical PSS model. By varying the pre-stress value in cables, the cable sectional area, the cable layouts and load combination, the deformation and internal force distribution of PSS are studied. From the obtained numerical results, some useful conclusions for the project design are drawn.Based on the studies mentioned above, the design of a practical engineering project is carried out. It is applied in The Hockey Hall in Beijing Lu Cheng. The design includes the structural scheme, the determination of the pre-stress distribution and magnitude , mode analysis, connection details, and so on.
